Red Ribbon Week takes place each year from October 23 through 31. The mission for the celebration is to help keep kids drug-free. In 1985, Drug Enforcement Administration undercover agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena was killed by drug traffickers in Mexico. Angered by his death and the damaging effects of drugs on our culture, people of Camarena’s hometown of Calexico, California, began wearing red ribbons in his honor. The trend spread across the country, and in 1988 Congress proclaimed the last full week in October as National Red Ribbon Week.
The Dundy County Stratton FBLA chapter is coordinating the Red Ribbon Week Celebration activities. This year's theme is "Be Kind to Your Mind, Live Drug Free!" The week will kick off with a presentation by FBLA officers to the elementary student body on Monday morning, October 23. Students in grades Pre-K – 6 will have special dress up days for the week of October 23-27. The theme for Monday, October 23, is “Our Dreams Are Too Big For Drugs” so the students are encouraged to wear pajamas to school. Tuesday is “Say Peace Out to Drugs” and students will be asked to dress up as a hippie. Wednesday is “I’m Too Bright for Drugs!” which means the students should wear bright clothes. Thursday is “Give Drugs the Boot” so students are asked to dress in Western wear. Friday is “Team Up Against Drugs.” Students are asked to wear DCS or their favorite team apparel.
Each year more than 80 million young people and adults show their commitment to a healthy, drug-free life by participating in Red Ribbon Week activities. Please help us celebrate the choice of living a drug-free lifestyle.
